google fiber for Ventura

Your friendly neighborhood directory-makers here at SouthSeaward.com are excited to be involved in Ventura’s initiative to bring fiber-optic internet to our community. The initiative, known as “Think Big with a Gig,” would bring connection speeds up to 1000 times faster than anywhere else in the US.

Join us! Follow on Facebook, find all our different social networking efforts via our Google profile, and stay tuned to SouthSeaward for updates. But … the MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL: nominate Ventura!! The more people suggest Ventura, the better chance we have.

  1. We ARE making a difference. I know I feel involved just sifting through the emails in Google all day. I try to throw my 2 cents in every once in a while. However I also know that there are far greater minds than mine at work here. I am proud to have the logo that you helped design on the forefront of my website. I am also proud to even be the slightest bit involved in what decisions are made. Thanks for making it an open forum for all people of Ventura County and abroad.

It is really exciting, isn’t it?

  3. The exciting part seems to be the anticipation and the togetherness that this will bring us. We as a community will grow and flourish, and even if we lose the bid, the connections between the people that’ve come together will never fade.

I love the enthusiasm for this project!

    But…
The competition is stiff and we have slim chance of winning.
We don’t really need ultra-high speed broadband everywhere.
There are other broadband/entertainment delivery alternatives.

900 homes in Pierpont, all paying about $100/month for broadband and TV. That’s $90,000 per month leaving our community. How about if we become digital anarchists and co-op our own broadband? It’s got to be less expensive than the At&T/DirecTV/Dish/Charter combination now in place.

Why would we want to do this? 1) To encourage community stability and sustainability by promoting Pierpont as a work-at-home neighborhood, 2) To promote desirable tourism by offering free wi-fi, and 3) For the public good that comes with efficient communication and access to information.

I’m not saying we should give up on Google’s offer. After all, it’s a free lottery ticket – we may as well play it. But, the Google project is inspiring – wouldn’t it be great if that inspiration nurtured other local broadband delivery concepts?
